Commissioning for People involved in Children’s Ministry

28 January 2011 No Comment

Most churches have a ‘commissioning’ for leaders of various ministry areas, and usually people are asked to stand or go to the front and be prayed for, and often the whole congregation then stands and recognises that God’s power is not confined to the formal programs of the church and ministry isn’t just done by ordained leaders.

Another way to demonstrate visually our connectedness in the Body of Christ is to ask the children to stand, and for the adults to pray for them, perhaps laying their hand on a shoulder of a child close to them.

Then reverse this by asking the adults to stand and the children to pray for them by saying:

“We are the Body of Christ … His Spirit is in us.”

A child asks: What have you seen?

Congregation reply: We are witnesses to the greatness of God!

Reader 1: The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Reader 2:  No one has ever seen God.  It is God the only Son who is close to the Father’s heart who has made Him known.

Prayer 1:  Creator God, we have seen your wonder in the beauty of creation and we know you through Jesus’ life on our planet.  Help us each day to watch out for you and to point you out to one another.

A child asks:  What have you heard?

All:  We are witnesses to the Good News of God!

Reader 3:  Jesus came proclaiming the Good News and saying “The time is here, the kingdom of God is near!”

Reader 4:  Lord, where else can we go?  You have words of eternal life.

Prayer 2:  Jesus, you brought good news, and you have called us to follow you.  Help us spread good news in our families and homes, our schools and work.  Give us opportunities to speak out that your kingdom is near our friends, our family, our street …

A child asks:  What have you received?

All:  We are witnesses to the grave of God!

Reader 5:  From God’s fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

Reader 6:  We have different gifts according to the grace given us.

Prayer 3:  Holy Spirit, thank you for your gifts to us, displaying your creative power, forming us as the Body of Christ in this place at this time.  Give us love and joy and peace in our differences and may the whole world be blessed by the overflow of your grace.

A Child:  We are the Body of Christ.

All:  His Spirit is in us.  Amen.
