Child Protection Requirements for Lay People

Whenever a person takes on a leadership role or seeks to be involved in a ministry involving young people, their congregation has the responsibility to ensure that they have met Child Protection requirements. The steps below outline the basic responsibilities of congregations with regard to child protection.

1) Does the ministry/role involve direct contact with children 0-18 years?

If YES, go to 2.

If NO, there are no Child Protection requirements to be met.

2) Will the person be paid for what they do?

If YES, you will need to consult the Synod’s requirements for employing someone who will work with children and young people.

If NO, continue to 3.

3) All volunteers working with children must complete a volunteer declaration. The original copy of this declaration must be kept in the congregations secure files. A copy can also be issued for the volunteer’s record.
4) All volunteers working with children should complete Child Protection Training to ensure they are well informed on appropriate conduct for working with children and the procedures required should a child safety and protection issue be raised.
5) Does the volunteer teach SRE/Scripture in NSW* Public Schools?

If YES, go to 6.

If NO, you have now met the requirements.

*Requirements for the ACT are different. See our CRE (ACT) page for more details.

6) Volunteers who teach SRE also need to meet the standards required by the Department of Education. For a summary of these requirements, check out the SRE Authorisation Page. Once these are satisfied you have met the requirements.
